Vernacular architecture in Wallachia as reflected in the paintings of the Impressionist painter Nicolae Grigorescu: “House with Veranda” (1880s), which is a mix between the Transylvanian Szekler type houses from the north, and the Ottoman ones from the south, in Bulgaria, Wallachia being a transition region between the two as regards the vernacular architecture of the peasant communities. One of the rare uses of the Wallachian style church portal in Neo-Romanian context can be seen at Cantacuzino Castle (1911) in Busteni, the Transylvanian Alps, designed by arch. Grigore Cherkez; such as this gangway. Leafing through one of the best Marxist theory books on Romania, published in 1945 by Lucretiu Patrascanu, a communist killed savagely by his fellow Romanian communists in a show trial in the 1950s. Patrascanu has been probably the only high value intellectual of the Romanian Communist Party throughout its history, an organisation of thugs and simpletons, reflected today in the populist electoral pool of the country. The book is signed by a theatre actor, Aurel Rogalschi, and I bought it from a Bucharest antique bookshop with a ticket to his theatre representation, Sherlock Holmes, in March 1945, just before the Stalinist deluge and Russia. conquest of Eastern Europe. #lucretiupatrascanu #casedeepoca #valentinmandache

This is the most impressive collection of monumental Neo-Romanian ceilings, which I have ever encountered: at the 1911 designed (1920s completed) Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni, the Transylvanian Alps; arch. Grigore Cherkez.
